WEEK IN REVIEW

Agriculture: The World Bank said on Monday it had approved $90 million in loans for agricultural projects in three East African nations. The $30 million each for Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania

The money will be channeled through national research programmes.

Mining: Tanzania Chamber of Minerals and Energy has asked the government should reconsider its intention to lift excise duty exemptions on mining companies as it will hurt the industry. The measure has been put in place by the government as a result of loss of tax revenues.

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals said the government had almost completed a review of the country's mining policy. The government hopes a new mining law will come into force in 2009/10.
